Additional training – how to ask your boss for more help

Posted on April 8, 2022 at 4:15 pm

Whether you are in a fairly new position or have been doing your role for a number of years, at some point you may want to do some additional training. This may be training to develop your skills in your current job role or training to further your career by taking the next step on the career ladder.

It can feel daunting to pluck up the courage to ask your boss to put you forward for additional training as it is an additional cost to the business but the key is how you ask. You really need to be able to state not only your personal case for wanting to train more but also a viable business case.

Think about the benefits to your team, or company as a whole, that would benefit from you undertaking this training and set these points out to your manager. Adding in any costing element would also be useful, for example, the course would cost the company X amount however I will then be able to do XY and Z saving the company money in the future.

As long as you keep a level head and set out your case fairly you should find that most companies are more than happy to provide additional support and training throughout your career.

The job of an employer

Posted on October 31, 2016 at 9:51 pm

Many employees think that being an employers is easy and that they have a great time bossing everyone about but this is simply not the case. Any good employer will know the difficulties between keeping your employees happy but also ensuring that work gets completed on time and to standard whilst still making a profit. Being an employer is a very careful balancing act and you constantly need to be in touch with what is happening within the business without micro managing.

If you give your employee’s too much freedom you may find that work quality and also production is reduced but if you try to get too involved you may cause employees to lose moral and confidence in themselves and therefore not perform as well as they could do.

As an employer, always try and employee people that you can trust and that have a passion for your business as these are the people that will most likely help your business to succeed.

Posted on February 25, 2014 at 10:05 am

Looking for new employment while already employed has many benefits. It also has a number of drawbacks as well, where if you get caught out in a bad situation, you can quickly find your attractiveness as a potential new employee deteriorating.

For most business owners, when they are looking for new personnel, one thing which excites their appetites is somebody already employed. For most people in this situation, they are moving company looking for better opportunities. This initiative by itself bodes well for most employers, but also, most people who are good at the work they do are already in employment.

For a person already in employment, looking for new employment, one thing to make sure of before you quit your job is that you have a firm offer of a new job before you quit your current one. For many business owners, getting you to quit your job would give them more leverage in the negotiations, so keeping your job until you have an offer is a good way of keeping the leverage on your side. Of course, it could go even worse from this situation, for instance, if you quit your job because a greater opportunity presents itself, only to dry up once you have left your job, then your situation can quickly deteriorate into something quite disastrous.
