How to answer awkward questions in an interview

Posted on February 28, 2017 at 10:02 pm

Many people find interviews very stressful and panic about what questions they are going to be asked. The best way to calm nerves for an interview is to be prepared. Have a good understanding about the job you are going for, know your own CV and try and pre-empt what they might question you on and take some time to research the company that you are applying for the job with.

Often during an interview the interviewer will ask you some questions, some of which you may feel worried about what the right answer is and how to answer them.

A popular question which often comes up is the interviewing asking what the candidates weaknesses are. IF this questions does arise, there are a few pointers you should bear in mind. Many people end up making costly mistakes when answering this question which could end up to them not being offered the job. Common mistakes include the candidate saying that they are too much of a perfectionist or that they work too hard sometimes. They may also say that they cannot think of a single weakness which often doesn’t go down well as the interviewer will be able to tell they are not being truthful. Being too honest and saying something like you find it hard getting to work on time, will raise red flags.

You need to be truthful but fair to yourself so could mention a weakness that you have that is not going to limit your ability in the job, but state that you are aware of it and what you do to try and combat it.

How to cope with that difficult interview question

Posted on November 29, 2016 at 7:59 pm

We’ve all been there mid interview waiting for the compulsory difficult questions that most employers seem to ask in an attempt to wrong foot an interview candidate to try to get an idea of how you react in a difficult situation. However with the right preparation these questions needn’t leave you feeling flummoxed, instead you can answer calmly and collectedly allowing the interview to go as smoothly as possible.

One of the questions often asked is ‘What do you think is your worse attribute?’ now this can be a tricky one as you certainly don’t want to be reeling off a list of negative points about yourself that will then be used against you but you also cannot answer in a manner that would make you appear arrogant. A good safe option is to say that you tend to be a perfectionist and that you push yourself more than necessary as you take pride in what you do so don’t like to rush a task until its completed properly. This allows the interviewer to then ask whether you can keep to deadlines in which case you can answer that you can but insist on delivering the best possible outcome in the time allocated for the task.

Using social media to find a job

Posted on September 28, 2016 at 9:18 pm

Social media is now a massive part of our lives and is used by many of us on a daily basis. Social media can be used in a number of ways by different people but many businesses are starting to see the advantages of it and jumping on board. If you are looking for a new job then historically you may have looked in the local paper, the Job Centre or even on an online jobs board, but now many people are turning to social media sites.

Facebook and Twitter are often places where jobs are posted for the public to see. It may be that you join a group specifically for job postings in your area or that you search local businesses to see if any of them are currently recruiting.

LinkedIn is also a good way to find new opportunities and often many companies will use this to search for potential employees they may wish to try and recruit.

Do I need to revise for an interview?

Posted on May 31, 2016 at 2:12 pm

Some people may see this as a bit of an odd question, but many of us ask ourselves this from time to time. The answer is yes in a way, we should do some revision before an interview.

Companies like employees who show an interest in their business and have a bit of background knowledge. Most businesses have a website or social media pages that you can read through to find out a bit more about them. It may have information on how the business was started, their working ethos and the current team. Reading through a “meet the team” page can also help calm nervous on the interview day and you may already be able to recognise a few faces.

You will probably not be tested on your knowledge of the company but if asked, then it is handy to know some background information that you can share in the interview.

Can I ask questions in an interview?

Posted on April 25, 2016 at 10:11 pm

Many people are under the illusion that an interview is solely for the employers benefit and that they simply have to answer what they are being asked without being allowed to ask any questions back. This is not the correct way to carry out an interview as although, predominantly the interview is mostly for the benefit of the employer it is also the perfect opportunity to ask questions which you want to know the answer too. Bombarding a potential employer with questions is never a good idea, but at the end of the interview, if you are unsure of any aspects of the job role i.e. working hours, salary, training etc then it that would be a good time to ask.

Making sure you ask questions in the right way is a must and most interviewers will give you an opportunity to do this at the end of the meeting.

Perfecting your interview technique

Posted on November 30, 2014 at 7:52 pm

The majority of us find attending an interview for a job a very daunting experience. You may be highly qualified for the position, have all the experience required, but still feel extremely nervous when it comes to the actual interview. To prepare for an interview you firstly need to decide what to wear. You want to wear something professional and that makes you feel confident. If you feel confident then this will come across in the interview.

Once you have your outfit sorted it is a good idea to re-read through your CV and cover letter a few times, thinking of any questions they may ask you, such as why did you have a 12 month gap in your employment history, or why did you leave this company after only 4 months? Being prepared for these types of questions will help you to remain calm.

It is a great idea to research a bit about the company that you are going to attend the interview with. Look at their website, find out who the key people and clients are and familiarise yourself with their recent news and company background.

Stuck on writing a CV?

Posted on September 23, 2014 at 1:43 pm

Compiling a CV can be a daunting task, especially if it is the first one you have done. There are many templates out there that you can use and people often upload their own CV for others to use as a base to start from.

If you are going to use a template, make sure you look for ones that have been created recently (within the last 12 months) as often the way CV’s are generally written can change with the times. These days, CV’s tend to be a little bit shorter and often contain bullet pointed information as opposed to lengthy paragraphs. This is because there are often so many people applying for a position that employers want to be able to scan read your CV to see if you would be suitable and haven’t got the time to be reading pages and pages. You should also try and find a CV that is relevant to your industry as some sectors require more information in a CV than others and often you can pick up some good tips from a CV that is relevant to the vacancy that you are applying for.

Why is it important to keep your CV up to date?

Posted on July 28, 2014 at 10:30 pm

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is basically a record of our past employment and qualifications. In a CV you can expect to find personal information such as name and address contact numbers, Schools attended, qualifications received, further education qualifications and work based studies along with previous and current employment. Within the employment section, the main job tasks and responsibilities should be discussed, with emphasis on the skills required for the job that you are applying for.

It is recommended to tweak your CV every time you send it out to a new company. Not only should you make sure that you have discussed the job experience you have had in similar roles but also to ensure that you have all information up to date such as contact details. The last thing you want is to impress someone with your CV only to find they cannot contact you as you have left an old phone number on it.
